Nylon webbing is used for many things. Dog collars, rock climbing gear, purse straps, and many other products used by millions everyday. Seat belts are a great example of nylon webbing most people are familiar with. If you are planning on using it at home there are some nylon webbing tips and tricks you should learn about first. The webbing can be difficult to work with. It tends to fray when cut. The webbing design and thickness also make sewing a challenge. Learning the following nylon webbing tips and tricks will help you with using it.

How to cut Nylon Webbing

Cutting nylon webbing can led to fraying. The following nylon webbing tips and tricks will ensure an even cut with no fraying. There are two options that will result in an even cut and a sealed edge that will prevent fraying.

The first option is to use a heat cutting method. This will both cut the nylon webbing and seal it at the same time. Once your webbing is measured and marked accurately you need to put on a pair of heat-resistant gloves. Next, heat up a pair of stainless steel sheers. You can heat them with a butane torch or your choice of any flame source. When the shears are heated to a high temperature cut the nylon webbing on the measured mark. The heat will seal the webbing as you cut, but may leave residue on your shears. As soon as the nylon webbing is cut take a warm wet cloth and wipe the shears clean.

If you don’t want to use the heat method for cutting your nylon webbing you can also cut and then seal the webbing. This will prevent getting residue stuck on your cutting shears. First, you need to cut the webbing at your desired length. Make sure you have strong cutting shears in order to achieve a straight line. After the nylon webbing is cut, you simply use a flame to partially melt and seal the end. A good choice of flame for this a butane lighter.

How to Sew Nylon Webbing

Nylon webbing is extremely strong, which can make sewing it a challenge. The most important thing to remember when sewing nylon webbing is to use a very heavy-duty thread. The stitching will not last long if you use standard thread. Also, you will need to use a strong needle. A needle designed for use with jean material will work just fine, such as size 110. It is important to change your needle often, so make sure to have plenty on hand. Once you have found the right thread and needle, you can begin to sew. Two machines that work well for sewing this material are Singer 640 and Kenmore 19150. Make sure that you use a zigzag pattern stitch and go very slowly. If you notice your machine starting to lag, it is time to change your needle. When you have finished stitching you need to go back over the end of the stitching with a “X” pattern to ensure a proper hold.

Following these nylon webbing tips and tricks will ensure a proper cut and stitch. The more you work with nylon webbing the easier it will be.
